The SimTech Chair for Mathematical Systems Theory at the IMNG was established in 2010 as part of the Excellence Initiative. There I have been in charge of the complete administration of the chair since the beginning. What I like most are the interesting international contacts - colleagues, guests and students from all over the world, as well as the wide range of tasks, which always brings something new. Last year, for example, we designed the institute's website in the university's new web design. One current challenge is a third-party industrial project in Spain, which raises questions about contract design, licensing and tax issues. Here I work closely together with the central administration, but also bring along my knowledge from earlier activities in industry.
In addition, since 2012 I have been the administrative contact for all students at the department who would like to spend one or two semesters abroad as part of the Erasmus+ programme (our outgoings) or who come to us from our partner universities (the so-called incoming students).
Erasmus+? What exactly is this?
The EU's Erasmus programme has been promoting cross-border mobility of students, but also university staff in Europe since 1987.
The Department of Mathematics has numerous cooperations from Norway to Spain, Ireland to Turkey. Erasmus+ not only offers a mobility grant, exemption from tuition fees at the host university and recognition of academic achievements, but also excellent support from the International Office of the University of Stuttgart or the host university as well as free preparatory online language courses (for all EU languages).
Interesting! And where can students get more detailed information?
First information and also very nice experience reports from former outgoings are available on the new page of the faculty..All information about the programme and the procedure is of course available on the pages of the International Affairs Department.
If a student is interested, an initial group consultation with the IZ is the best option. Only then do the students usually come to us and ask what the chances are for the particularly sought-after places in Uppsala, Bergen or Limerick. It is important to keep in mind that one should plan some time in advance and have the following deadlines in mind:
- Preliminary 6-12 months
- Application deadline 15 January (WinterTerm, SummerTerm or Winter and SummerTerm)
- Application deadline for remaining possibilities (SummerTerm only) 15 June.
And do you also have your own experience with Erasmus?
As a student, I have unfortunately not yet been able to benefit from Erasmus. My semester abroad in Belgium and an internship in Spain were before the programme came into being.
But this year I was able to take part in an Erasmus+ mobility workshop for non-scientific staff in Valencia. The opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from all over Europe was very interesting. Such mobility is open to all university staff. Further information can be found on the employee pages. There you can also find first experiences , like my own one.
Mrs. Schaettgen, continue to enjoy your varied tasks in the department.
Elisabeth
