Prof. Sändig was an adjunct professor at the Institute of Applied Analysis and Numerical Simulation from 2003 to 2011 and continued to be active in research after her retirement. She studied mathematics at the University of Rostock, obtained her doctorate there in 1973 and was appointed associate professor. She habilitated at the University of Rostock in 1981. From 1993 onwards, Prof. Sändig worked in the research group of Prof. Dr. W. Wendland at the Chair of Applied Mathematics in Stuttgart until she was appointed to the renowned Sofia Kovalevskaia Visiting Professorship at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in 1997. She returned to the University of Stuttgart in 1998 and was appointed Associate Professor in 2003.
