The brain and the future of artificial intelligence [DE]
Lecture by Helmut Linde (Merck Group / Data Science)
What will the next stage of Artificial Intelligence look like? What comes after Deep Learning? A key difference between today's algorithms and biological intelligence is that the brain is much better at forming abstract concepts: A child learns a new type of object even if he has seen only a few examples. We recognize a piece of music no matter what instrument it is played on and in what key. And we understand a story regardless of whether we see, hear, or read it. Even the most advanced algorithms, on the other hand, are still far from these capabilities.
But there is hope that we can learn tricks from nature: Despite all the complexity of the brain, there is increasing evidence that many seemingly different brain functions are based on a common basic principle. Can we succeed in decoding this "canonical algorithm" and why do we need the methods of mathematics and physics to do so?
