In the academic year 2018/2019, numerous degrees obtained at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics had been reason to celebrate and duly honour the academic performance. Among the total of 236 graduates, 113 were Bachelor's and 92 Master's graduates; 31 of them studied for a teaching profession.
The Dean, Professor Dr. Michler, had invited to the graduation ceremony on 17.01.2020, which was attended by around 240 guests and found the appropriate festive setting in the traditional lecture hall as well as in the foyer, both appropriately decorated to represent a ceremonial character. The ensemble of the Academic Orchestra of the University of Stuttgart provided the musical highlight with a musical selection of the Danish String Quartet.
The letters of congratulations were personally presented to the graduates of the various study programs by the Dean, Professsor Michler.
Dr. Veronika Schleper, herself a former graduate of the faculty and as representative of the Robert-Bosch GmbH, honoured the best Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mathematics. She awarded the prizes to Ms. Laura Voggesberger and Mr. Tizian Wenzel for the best Master's degrees of the academic year and to Mr. David Holzmüller for his outstanding Bachelor's degree.
The two prizes of the Artur Fischer Foundation were again handed over personally by its managing director, Dr. Günter Köble; the two Master's graduates, Mr. Tobias Mielich and Mr. Christoph Lohrmann, were awarded the prizes according to the criteria of the best grade and the shortest duration of study.
For the first time this year, the best dissertation at the Department of Physics was awarded the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation Prize, which was endowed with 4,000 euros. This honour was given to Dr. Nicolai Lang, who represented an outstanding achievement in the field of theoretical physics with his dissertation and who had prepared the contents of his work in a short lecture that was understandable and interesting for non-physicists. The managing director of the foundation, Dr. Stefan Jorda, took the opportunity to attend the ceremony and to present the award and the prize personally.
Professor Michael Eisermann, on behalf of the Society of Friends of Mathematics, presented the prize to the best student in the teaching degree program of mathematics, Ms. Anna Wackerow; not without making clear the great importance of a teaching profession in general and in the fields of mathematics and physics in particular.
