The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Stuttgart mourns the death of
Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Ulrich Kneißl
* 24.03.1939 † 04.01.2023
Ulrich Kneißl studied physics at the University of Giessen, where he received his PhD in 1965 and completed his habilitation in 1977. In 1972 he was appointed University Professor at the University of Giessen. He researched and taught at the Strahlenzentrum of the University of Giessen until he accepted a professorship at the University of Stuttgart in 1991. Here he headed the Institut für Strahlenphysik (Radiation Physics) until his retirement in 2004.
His main scientific interest was nuclear physics and in particular photonuclear reactions, which he researched throughout his research career; starting with photofission of heavy nuclei and later studying the structure of deformed nuclei. For this purpose, he also very successfully used the Dynamitron accelerator of the Institut für Strahlenphysik.
Ulrich Kneißl was an enthusiastic and inspiring, world-renowned researcher with more than 250 publications and a very talented teacher. He will be remembered fondly and honored through the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
