The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics mourns for
Professor Dr. Hans Christoph Wolf,
emeritus at the 3rd Physical Institute,
who passed away on June 26th, 2020 at the age of 90.
Born on July 16th, 1929, Prof. Wolf studied physics, chemistry and biology at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and Tübingen. Following his doctorate in 1952, he received a research grant at the Technical University of Munich and moved to the University of Stuttgart in 1955, where he habilitated in 1958. In 1964, he became the first director of the 3rd Physical Institute, which he headed until receiving the emeritus status in 1997.
His scientific interests were in organic solid-state physics, especially in the optical and electronic properties of organic crystals. Together with his employees, he succeeded in establishing an internationally recognized research area in Stuttgart in this field.
Prof. Wolf received the Otto Hahn Prize for Chemistry and Physics in 2000, awarded by the German Physical Society and the Society of German Chemists. He is also known for his textbooks on atomic, molecular and quantum physics.
We thank Prof. Wolf for his work and will keep a lasting memory.
Prof. Dr. Peter Michler (Dean) and Prof. Dr. Christian Holm (Vice dean Physics)
